Imagine teaching computer science without a single computer in the classroom. Simply writing the words “mouse” and “keyboard” on a chalkboard or drawing a picture of a monitor doesn’t offer much understanding.

In many parts of Haiti, this is a reality. Teachers recognize computer literacy skills are critical for their students’ futures, but don’t have access to the essential tools.

We now live in a world where access to personal computing is critical for productivity, learning and job skills. This is what prompted World Wide Village to invest in two computer labs in Luly, Haiti, and the timing could not have been more perfect!

In the fall of 2022, Church at Viera in Viera, Florida hosted their annual pumpkin patch fundraiser. A portion of the proceeds from this fundraiser were donated to provide small computer labs for two schools in Luly, Haiti.

We didn’t realize until later that God’s timing was perfect in providing computers for the schools.

Laptops were purchased in Haiti and ready for the start of the 2023-2024 school year, just as the Haitian department of education was announcing that all national exams were going to be administered on computers for the first time this year.

A special thanks to Church at Viera for blessing students in Luly with the opportunity to study computer science this past year. Students even continue to spend time in the computer lab with classes over the summer, soaking up all they can!

In the midst of such difficult days, learning technology is building hope and giving students a look into a brighter future.
