Viergemica has been through unimaginable losses. She fled her home as gangs overtook her village, leaving with nothing but the clothes on her back.
When her father returned home to try and recover some of their belongings he was shot and killed by the gangs. In fear, Viergemica made the journey north to the Artibonite region of Haiti with her mother and brother to live with their grandmother.
Only one week after arriving in Artibonite, her grandmother died unexpectedly. This was crushing after so much loss. Falling into deep despair, Viergemica's mother could not care for her.
Hungry and afraid, Viergemica and her brother were shuffled from house to house but no one had the means to take them in until they finally arrived in the care of a World Wide Village staff member.
