EDUCATION:

Statistics tell us that more than 50% of gang members in Haiti are now under the age of 18. They are children, walking around with machine guns, abused and manipulated by those in power above them. They’re recruited, bribed and daily being killed in the streets. For many of these youth, joining a gang is their only means to survival. They feel they have no choice.

As we look over the photos of the students in our sponsorship program, we are grateful they do have a choice. Instead of picking up guns, they are picking up schoolbooks. Instead of relying on a gang to provide their basic needs, they are receiving nutritious lunches at school. Instead of being filled with minds of hatred, their teachers are filling their minds with knowledge and a better way.

Education is now a means to gang prevention.

The longer we’re able to provide a safe environment for our students, the better the odds they won’t end up on the streets fighting in a reckless war. If you sponsor a child, you are providing not only a brighter tomorrow, but a safer today.
