Have you ever wondered how school is different in Haiti compared to the United States? These differences are shaped by culture, resources, and what’s expected of students. We hope you enjoy learning a little more about education in Haiti!

YEARS OF SCHOOLING:

One unique difference between school in Haiti and the United States is how the grade levels are structured. In Haiti, students typically attend three years of preschool before entering primary school in first grade, and their education continues through grade 13.

This longer school path in Haiti, combined with national exams along the way, means students often spend more years working toward graduation, making persistence and support especially important.

COST OF EDUCATION:

In the U.S., children have the opportunity to attend public school for free, with education required by law and supported by government funding.

In Haiti, there are very few public schools available. The vast majority of schools are privately run, and families are responsible for paying for tuition, uniforms, and supplies. For families already struggling to make ends meet, those costs can be a huge hurdle to education, especially in rural areas.

ACCESS TO SCHOOLS:

In the U.S., most children have a school nearby. If not, school buses are available to pick up students in their own neighborhoods making attendance more convenient.

In rural Haiti, schools can be far from home, and transportation is expensive. Long walks, unsafe roads, and financial strain all make regular attendance a challenge. Simply showing up to school each day is a meaningful accomplishment. Many mountain villages have no secondary schools available at all. Students who want to continue their education into high school are forced to move away from their families to continue learning.

World Wide Village is helping to take away these barriers to learning by helping local schools keep their doors open and by providing financial support through sponsorship to students in need. A big THANK YOU to our sponsors for making education in Haiti more accessible to all students!
