Ishmael has been through unimaginable losses. He fled his home as gangs overtook his village, leaving with nothing but the clothes on his back.
When his father returned home to try and recover some of their belongings he was shot and killed by the gangs. In fear, Ishmael made the journey north to the Artibonite region of Haiti with his mother and sister to live with their grandmother.
Only one week after arriving in Artibonite, his grandmother died unexpectedly. This was crushing after so much loss. Falling into deep despair, Ishmael's mother could not care for him.
Hungry and afraid, Ishmael and his sister were shuffled from house to house but no one had the means to take them in until they finally arrived in the care of a World Wide Village staff member.
