SUMMER IN HAITI

School wrapped up in Haiti last month and it is officially summer! Summertime in Haiti is filled with juicy watermelon and fresh mangos grown in the mountains and delivered into markets across the country. They are a delicious treat and mark the beginning of summer.

Have you ever wondered how your sponsored student spends their time over summer break? Because Luly is a town along the coast of Haiti, many families take advantage of the ocean nearby during hot summer days. Older students love to go fishing or swim in the ocean.

Children also enjoy playing soccer, hopscotch, or flying kites. Many families enjoy listening to music on the radio and spending time relaxing on shaded front porches. To avoid the heat, children will find areas of shade to play with marbles, toy cars, or dolls. As many families do not have the means to purchase toys, children often make do with what they have, creating toys out of household items. In Haiti it’s called “degaje” – to make do with what you have.

We interviewed many of our sponsored students during the school year and asked about their favorite games and activities. Here’s what they most enjoy: soccer, playing dolls, jump rope, hopscotch, toy cars, riding bikes, hide and seek, marbles, and flying kites!

PREPARING FOR 2024-2025

Students in 9th grade and those who just finished their senior year of high school took national exams over the last two weeks. They now anxiously await their scores as they will determine their admittance into high school and university.

Even though students are enjoying a break from school, World Wide Village continues to work hard to prepare for next school year. Our construction crew is busy fixing benches and building a security wall around the Luly School.

Our sponsorship coordinators are visiting school directors and families, gathering report cards as grades are released over the summer. Plus, many schools have already started the registration process to prepare for 2024-2025.

Each new school year is a joy and only possible with your help. Thank you!

EMERGENCY FOOD PACKS

Summer can also be a difficult time for families in Haiti. With the school year over, children no longer have access to school lunches, pushing more families to the brink of desperation. As gangs continue to wreak havoc in Haiti, countless families are going hungry.

A gift of $110 can provide a food pack of rice and beans, feeding a family of four for a month! Plus, if you give in the month of August, one Creole Bible will be donated to the new church plant in Bail, Haiti for each food pack given! You can help feed the body and soul.
